we are not alone.

on my 13th birthday, a long long time ago, my brother gave me my first (and last) birthday present. it was a vcd boxset of evangelion. i had only just started watching anime, hooked on to RUROUNI KENSHIN (which got sadly bastardized by axn and renamed SAMURAI X) and then started raving about the snippets that i knew about evangelion.
a couple of hours ago the boyfriend and i made a random decision to catch a movie. grumpy from work i figured why not catch THE SPIDERWICK CHRONICLES. long story about how we had preview tickets but i was unhappy and blablabla and we weren't in town anyway. but we reached the theater and caught sight of EVANGELION. the only review i got was from my sister, she's watched it before (thanks to me i might add) and told me that it wasn't anything new. consider it a very condensed version of 4 discs (which is roughly 8 episodes). so we went in, not expecting anything and definitely not hyped up about it.
you must remember before you step in, not to expect a brand new storyline. no kirishima mana (who appeared in the game) and no asuka langley (i'll explain why later). true enough it is like a quick summary of what happens in the first 8 or so episodes. there're bits of the flashback from later on when shinji questions his existence and when he runs away and a sneak peek at seele's grand plan of everything ending with the instrumentality project.
but what's new is the scenes that we never got to see. flashbacks (thank god... i'm not a fan of draggy flashbacks) were cut short and they added in scenes that you never got to see in the series. the best bits was the graphics. how do i put it... more realistic? more edgy? the essence of evangelion was retained but they added on to it, they enhanced it instead of stripping it and giving it a gaudy new coating. i suspect the seiyuus (voice actors) were the same but i can't really be sure.
as always, the background tracks were amazing. i'll always remember how i bought the cd and listened to the exact tracks that shinji would, on repeat. but when ayanami's theme came up. that just blew me away. the angels were improved aesthetically. especially the 5th one, that was a box and was trying to drill its way past the geofront and head for nerv. that battle had me digging my fingers into the seat. where in the series it was just this diamond-shaped box that emitted out an energy beam from the gap, this angel would break apart and form itself into various... weapon-like structures that fought back. i'll need to re-watch the series again to compare the battle.
the only (mildly) disappointing bit was that, there's a continuation. but honestly, i don't care. evangelion, in high definition and on the big screen. pardon the anime geek in me. but i can't wait to see more never-ever-included footage in the next installment.
evangelion's symbolism to me? how i identify so well with shinji - his hedgehog dilemma, that desire to be acknowledged and praised, the lack of strong parental guidance in life and perhaps even... finding that single slice of hope despite resigning to his fate as an eva pilot; put on the frontlines to defend humanity. what's sacrificing one life to save the rest of mankind?
